Ashby Calling For Action On Bail Reform Repeal

Assemblyman Jake Ashby (R,C,I,Ref-Castleton) again is calling for action to be taken to repeal the bail reform law in response to the Joint Legislative Budget Hearing on Public Protection. The assemblyman’s bill, A.8855, would fully repeal the bail reform law.

“We’ve had more than 40 days of bail reform and nearly each day another terrible or tragic case was reported where an unrepentant criminal was set free after their arrest,” said Ashby. “Bail reform as it is written in New York is neither just or merciful. It disregards victim and public safety in favor of law breakers. We cannot wait one more day to repeal this mistake. New York must act now.”

Numerous cases have been reported throughout the state. There have been many instances where individuals were arrested for significantly violent crimes, such as domestic violence incidents, assault and manslaughter, only to be released soon after their arrest. In some cases there were serial criminals who were arrested only to be arrested yet again after their law-mandated release.
