Joe Giglio Announces Community Blood Drive

Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R, I, C-Gowanda) today announced that he will join the American Red Cross at their community blood drive on Thursday, August 7 in Wellsville. The event will be held at the Wellsville American Legion at 23 Jefferson Street from 2 pm until 7 pm.

“It’s important that the community comes out for this event. During the summer, blood reserves diminish as New Yorkers go on vacation. In order to maintain a sufficient supply we need people in the community to donate at events like this,” said Giglio.

According to the American Red Cross, donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and not have donated in the last two months.

Although 60% of Americans are eligible to donate blood, only five percent do. With even fewer donations during the summer months, many hospitals find themselves with critical shortages.

“The donation of blood is an easy way to give back to the community and will go a long way in saving lives,” said Giglio. “Together we can make sure the supply does not reach a critically low level and that the needs of our hospitals are met. I hope to see everyone at this event.”
