Legislature Passes Bill To Expand Volunteer Firefighter Cancer Coverage

This week lawmakers passed A.711-B, providing enhanced disability benefits for volunteer firefighters who develop certain forms of cancer. Assemblyman Joseph M. Giglio (R,C,I-Gowanda) is a sponsor of A.711-B.

“Our volunteer firefighters spend countless hours to keep their communities safe. They put their lives on the line to protect the lives and properties of their neighbors. This bill gives us the opportunity to provide coverage for cancers resulting from their dedicated service,” said Giglio.

The legislation provides coverage to volunteer firefighters who have served at least five years and passed a physical detecting no evidence of cancer. The bill provides up to $25,000 in coverage for firefighters who develop cancer of the breast or prostate; lymphatic, hematological, digestive, neurological, reproductive, or urinary systems; or melanoma. Additionally, disability benefits are available for up to 36 months if the firefighter is becomes totally disabled , and in the case of death, accidental death benefits may be provided to the firefighter’s family.
