Brown Calls for A Full Investigation of State Unemployment Fraud

A statement from Assemblyman Keith P. Brown (R,C-Northport)

“A recent report by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli revealed New York State lost $11 billion due to fraudulent employment payments to scammers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This audit shows the Department of Labor’s negligence and lack of oversight that made it easier for people to scam the system. The findings in this report are troubling, especially when high inflation continues to crush the middle class. Comptroller DiNapoli warned the state Labor Department about its out-of-date system and the need to modernize it.

“It’s no surprise the state lost billions in tax dollars due to an antiquated system long overdue for improvements. I expect Labor Commissioner Reardon to introduce a plan to restructure the current system before the Legislature begins budget hearings during the next legislative session. New Yorkers deserve a modernized, efficient system that is well-equipped for the foreseeable future.”
