Assemblymembers Zebrowski, Sayegh & Senator Carlucci Recognize New City Resident’s 100th Birthday

This afternoon, Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, Senator David Carlucci, and Yonkers Assemblyman Nader Sayegh presented New City resident, June Cohen, with Assembly and Senate Proclamations to recognize her 100th Birthday. The legislators joined with her family to honor June, recognize her incredible accomplishments, and celebrate her centenarian status.

June’s many accomplishments span decades, most notably, graduating from Trenton State Teacher’s College at a time when women rarely attended college. She then went on to teach in a one room schoolhouse on a farm where she met her husband, Sergeant Bernard Cohen. They had two daughters together, Meryl and Jocelyn, and moved to Manhattan in the early 1950s. Years later, June came to Rockland and moved in with her daughter and son-in-law. She quickly became involved in the community with senior groups, playing cards with her friends, and driving her grandchildren to school.

“It is an honor to join with June and her family to recognize such a milestone birthday. Mrs. Cohen is an example to us all; her zest for life and positive attitude is contagious and one we should all strive for. We recognize her countless contributions as a dedicated teacher, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Wishing June and her family endless joy, health, and many more memories,” said Assemblyman Zebrowski.

"I am proud and humbled to join the celebration of Mrs. June Cohen on her 100 years young birthday. I have known June and her family for over 40 years; working with her son-in-law Ivan Toper as fellow administrators in the Yonkers Public Schools. June Cohen has always exhibited independence and commitment to her family and to her community. Her focus on good health, happiness, and strong family bonds is her secret to a long life. Thank you June for such a wonderful life. I join my colleagues Senator David Carlucci and Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski in saying congratulations and Happy Birthday, June!" said Assemblyman Sayegh.

“It’s a privilege when I get to meet members of our Rockland community like June and honor her contributions as a teacher and a woman who graduated college and learned to drive at a time when many women did not. At 100-years-old, her wit and positive sprit lifts everyone up, and I am glad her family was able to share in celebrating her half birthday today,” said Senator Carlucci.
