Assemblymember Jean-Pierre Passes Legislation to Provide Guaranteed Sick Leave Amidst Corona Virus Outbreak

“As we come together to confront the unprecedented public health threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s critical that we do everything we can to protect New Yorkers’ health and economic security. That’s why I helped pass legislation, which will hopefully be signed into law shortly, that provides sick leave, expanded paid family leave benefits and temporary disability insurance (TDI) to New Yorkers who may be subject to a mandatory or precautionary quarantine or isolation (A.10153).

“While COVID-19 can affect anyone, it’s clear that working-class families, communities of color and other marginalized groups will bear the brunt of the pandemic’s economic impact. By guaranteeing sick leave and making New Yorkers directly affected by the virus immediately eligible for state benefits, we’re ensuring that every resident can stay home when they're sick without losing their income. I’ll continue working with state leaders and health officials to ensure our communities have the resources they need to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“In the meantime, I strongly encourage Long Island residents to take steps to reduce your risk of exposure and prevent the spread of this virus. This includes: practicing social distancing, washing your hands with soap and water frequently, covering your cough or sneeze, avoiding those who are sick, staying home when you’re sick and working from home, if possible.

“The health and safety of Long Island families is my top priority. If you have questions or are in need of assistance, don’t hesitate to contact my office by phone, email or through Facebook.”
