Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner’s Statement Regarding New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Paid Parental Leave Policy

“Bringing paid family leave to New York City families is crucial so that parents can maintain their jobs, and not see a drop in pay in the event of a family life event. It is an impossible scenario that so many face today in New York, where family breadwinners choose between ensuring care for their children or cashing their paycheck. In the Assembly, my colleagues and I have a long history of supporting paid family leave — this commonsense policy can ensure employee satisfaction and retention as well as maintain a healthier and more financially stable footing for working families. I commend Mayor de Blasio for his executive order that will provide paid time off for maternity, paternity, adoption, and or foster care leave to approximately 20,000 employees. His action is a win-win for employees and employers that should be replicated across New York.”
