The Federal Census is the nations only official count of everyone living in the United States and it is an essential tool in determining the distribution of billions of dollars in federal funding for our schools, health care and housing programs. It is also used when allocating the number seats each state will have in the House of Representatives.
In the Bronx we embrace our rich diversity and know that it is one of our greatest strengths, Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner (D-Bronx, 77th AD) said. The planned addition of a citizenship question to the census raised real concern about the motives of the administration in Washington. Todays Supreme Court ruling to block the addition of a citizenship question to the census will ensure that it is not used as a weapon to undercount, underrepresent or underfund our communities.
Ensuring that everyone is included in the Census is a critical priority of mine and I will continue proactively reaching out to residents, advocates, community based organizations and faith leaders to include families throughout our community, Assemblywoman Joyner said.
