Assemblywoman Buttenschon Introduces Legislation to Expand the Veterans Tuition Awards Program
February 20, 2024 - Last week, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-C Marcy) introduced legislation to expand eligibility for the veteran's tuition awards program (A9205).
“New York State is home to the fifth largest veteran population in the country with over 800,000 military veterans. Despite having such a large number of veterans, only those who served in active combat roles are eligible for the veteran’s tuition awards program,” said Assemblywoman Buttenschon. “I am proud to sponsor legislation that will expand eligibility to all veterans, no matter their role, to qualify for this program."
The veteran tuition awards program offers funding for up to the total cost of undergraduate or graduate tuition for New York State residents at a SUNY school. The program also provides tuition for approved vocational training programs.
“We appreciate the hard efforts the Assemblywoman does for veterans,” said Vincent Scalise, founder of the Utica Center for Development. “The benefits she brings to the table for us is truly appreciated, and we thank her.”
Additionally, Tom Buono, President of the Vietnam Veterans of America Utica Chapter #944 supports this legislation. “I fully support the expansion of the Veterans Tuition Awards Program,” he said. “It is a great program for veterans.”
“Because of the sacrifices our veterans have made for our freedoms and our country, we have a moral obligation to provide them with the necessary resources to help them transition back to civilian life. One of the best ways we can do this is by helping achieve a higher education,” said Buttenschon. “In the Assembly, I will always ensure the needs of our brave veterans are met.
