Assemblywoman Buttenschon’s Legislation to Help Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and their Advocates Navigate the Different Services to Address their Needs Passes Assembly

Today, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-C Marcy) announced that, in observance of Legislative Disabilities Awareness Day, the New York State Assembly passed her legislation to improve the independent developmental disability ombudsman program (A1577a).

"Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) and their advocates often have difficulty navigating the different services intended to address their needs. We must make these services more accessible to those who need them the most," stated Assemblywoman Buttenschon. "My legislation will improve the independent developmental disability ombudsman program by providing individuals with I/DD more support and guidance. This will allow them easier access to the care they deserve.”

Assemblywoman Buttenschon's legislation would establish a service delivery structure that includes a toll-free telephone helpline, an interactive website, and easy access to an ombudsman program staff member by email, telephone, or in person. This comprehensive system will be critical if an individual needs assistance filling out paperwork and documentation to access services, ensuring their needs are met.

“As we mark Legislative Disabilities Awareness Day, it is critical that we provide comprehensive and accessible support to individuals with I/DD and their advocates so they can receive the care and services they require," said Buttenschon. "I would like to thank my colleagues in the Assembly for joining the Senate in passing this legislation. I urge Governor Hochul to swiftly sign this bill into law to help those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities."
