Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-Utica/Rome) recently held a press conference where she awarded proclamations to the Oneida County Emergency Services 911 Center, Maynard Fire Department, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Oriskany Fire Department, Yorkville Police Department, Whitesboro Police Department, Whitesboro Fire Department, New York State Police, New York Mills Police Department and Kunkel Ambulance for their roles in the rescue of a 27-year-old woman in distress.

“This is an outstanding demonstration of collaboration by our first responders.When we dial 911, we are comforted knowing those that come to assist us are experts and will resolve the issue we are facing.Thanks to the brave and selfless actions of the multiple public safety departments and first responders a young woman is alive today,” Buttenschon said. “Our law enforcement and fire department personnel worked together to console and safely extract the victim despite her precarious and dangerous position as well as secure the scene and ensure civilian traffic continued running safely. There was a great personal risk to all those who responded, and yet they never once hesitated in their mission. This is an outstanding example of mutual aid and collaborative quick thinking by all that came to help. I’m proud to recognize these brave first responders for their exceptional service.”

On May 16, 2021, state troopers, Oneida County Sheriff Deputies and several local police and fire departments responded to a 911 call regarding an individual in distress on the Barge Canal bridge. The Maynard, Whitesboro and Oriskany fire departments all assisted in securing the victim in a harness and safely lowering her to the ground in an aerial ladder while police officers from several local departments as well as concerned citizens provided support. After the victim was secure, she was transported to Mohawk Valley Health Systems by Kunkel Ambulance. All of the local and state police and fire departments involved with the rescue were awarded proclamations.

“I would like to thank Assemblywoman Buttenschon for the recognition of our members. In the volunteer fire service, those of us who do volunteer do so without the expectation of being recognized. This was unexpected but greatly appreciated,” said Chief Pearl of the Maynard Fire Department.

"It's great when we all work together for a positive outcome," Vinny Faraone, Director of Operations for Kunkel Ambulance stated.
