Assemblyman Durso Presents West Islip High School Student Nils Haugen with A $3000 Scholarship Award
Assemblyman Michael Durso (R-Massapequa Park) recently presented West Islip High School Senior Nils Haugen with the Senator John J. Marchi Memorial Athletic Scholarship, valued at $3000. The scholarship, granted by the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators, recognizes outstanding academic performance, exceptional athletic ability, community service, financial need, and leadership potential.
"Nils exemplifies the attributes we look for in a scholarship recipient," said Assemblyman Durso. "He has demonstrated excellence not only in his academic pursuits, but also in extracurricular activities and community service.”
Nils credits his academic and athletic success to his strong connection to family, the West Islip community and inner self-motivation. With a cumulative GPA of 95.0, his rigorous course load has included numerous AP courses and STEM classes. Nils has made the Principal’s List every quarter throughout his entire high school career while participating in West Islip Football and West Islip Lacrosse all four years. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Math Honor Society. This year Nils was awarded the Jack Braddish Scholar Athlete Award which recognizes high achieving students who participate in a sport.
Nils’ strong sense of community has motivated him to organize a food drive for a local food pantry, participate in Holiday Adopt-a Family and Wreaths Across America. He has also volunteered for West Islip Lacrosse PAL and West Islip Library’s beautification programs. Nils holds certifications in CNC Mill Basic Operator and CPR/AED Lifeguard. During the summer, he works as a lifeguard for the Town of Babylon.
Nils plans to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering and play Lacrosse at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in the fall.
“These scholarships are a token of our commitment to supporting the next generation of leaders in their future endeavors,” said Assemblyman Durso. “On behalf of the Italian-American Conference of State Legislators, myself, President Angelo Morinello, Vice President Mario Mattera, and Treasurer Ed Ra, congratulations to all the scholarship winners and continued success!”
