Norris Announces New Boating Safety Course
Assemblyman Mike Norris (R,C-Lockport) is partnering with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office to announce a new Boating Safety Course available to the public. This week is National Safe Boating Week (May 21-27), and Norris has sponsored annual boating safety courses in order to help encourage boaters and personal watercraft users to be safer on the water during the boater season.
“Recently the state changed the law requiring the majority of boaters and personal watercraft users to obtain certification from courses like this in order to operate their boat, Jetski or Skidoo,” said Norris, who encourages the public to sign up early as space is limited. “In fact, these courses are so popular that this is the second seminar we are offering this year. I am grateful to the Niagara County Sheriff for their partnership and to everyone who is making efforts to stay safer on the water this season.”
To obtain your certification as required by the state, you must attend both parts of the two-part seminar being held on the evenings of June 14 and 16, or a similar event, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. This event will be held at the Olcott Fire Hall located at 1691 Lockport-Olcott Road in Burt, New York but you must be registered ahead of time to attend. Space is limited.
The state’s new law, known as Brianna’s Law, requires all motor boat operators born on or after January 1, 1988 to obtain this certification beginning in 2022. The course also certifies anyone aged 14 years or older to operate a personal watercraft in state waters.
