Norris Kicks Off 2022 Summer Reading Challenge
Assemblyman Mike Norris (R,C-Lockport) kicked off his annual Summer Reading Challenge this week by reading to third-grade students from Mr. Eberhart’s and Mrs. Xapsos’ classes at the George M. Southard Elementary School in Lockport.
The assemblyman read aloud Jess Keating’s Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean's Most Fearless Scientist, which is a children’s book telling a brief biography of zoology professor and writer Eugenie Clark (1922-2015), whose work led to the world’s greater understanding and protection of sharks as a species. He chose the book in keeping with the theme of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Oceans of Possibilities.
Every student who participates in the program will receive a bookmark and those who complete the program, which challenges students to read for 15 minutes every day for 40 days this summer, will receive a certificate honoring their achievement. The students at Southard Elementary also received New York State Coloring Books.
