Norris: Thank You To All Those Who Serve

A Column from Assemblyman Mike Norris (R,I-Lockport)

In honor of Veterans Day, on behalf of our community, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation and thanks to all of the brave men and women who serve in our military, and I would like to encourage all citizens to join me in taking some time to remember with gratitude the sacrifices made by veterans and their families so that we can enjoy the freedoms and bounty of living in the greatest nation on earth.

While more has been done in recent decades to properly show our pride and thanks for veterans, there is still more we can do in state government. For example, I am proud to sponsor legislation that would extend job opportunities for more veterans, particularly those looking to start or inherit their own business (A.6142). The Veteran Owned Business Enterprise Act deserves to come up to the floor for a vote in the state Assembly, and I will continue working to ensure it does.

To show our appreciation for veterans, I introduced legislation (A.5286-A) that would allow all veterans to rent cabins or cottages in state parks, historic sites and campgrounds free of charge. To help more veterans affordably obtain college degrees, I am a sponsor of a bill that would allow veterans to obtain SUNY or CUNY college credit for certain military training (A.7879). And, I am also proud to be a sponsor of legislation to allow veterans’ organizations to obtain capital improvement funding from state and municipal governments (A.8052).

I will continue fighting for the enactment of these measures as well as other measures that will support veterans and their families and improve their quality of life. There are many important and valuable services for veterans offered by the state including help with medical benefits, information and support for those concerned about post-traumatic stress disorder, and help finding a job, reducing your housing cost, and much more. You can learn more about these resources by visiting the state Division of Veterans’ Affairs website at www.veterans.ny.gov. Another wonderful way to learn about veteran-specific programs and resources as well as a great way to find support and social comradery is by visiting or joining a local veterans’ organization, such as a VFW or American Legion.

Nearly a million of our friends and neighbors across our great state are veterans. To each and every one of you: thank you. And to the greater public, please join me in showing our appreciation to veterans in our community this November 11th as well as throughout the year.
