Today, I met with Gov. Cuomo and many of our colleagues who represent lakefront communities to discuss the record-breaking water levels that are causing flooding and property damage along Lake Ontario. I am hopeful that we can continue working together in a bipartisan manner, not only to address the current flooding, but to take meaningful, proactive steps together, to protect New Yorkers from flooding in the future. Part of that includes sending a united message to Washington that Plan 2014 needs to be reconsidered, and to get our partners in federal government to assist with flood recovery and remediation flooding as well as to invest in our economy. I support the governor’s creation of the REDI Commission to help move us toward this goal so that we can foster tourism and economic development to help revitalize these communities. Further, I would like to see both the state and federal governments make a substantial and smart investment to protect property along the lake’s south shore. I have given the governor and his team a list of recommended projects, such as building a seawall in Olcott, that would better protect New Yorkers in the long-term. This combined approach would not only rebuild lakefront communities, that, quite frankly have been overlooked for too long, but it would help ensure their success for future generations.
