Montesano Pushes Legislation to Strip Gov. Cuomo of Emergency Powers

Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,C,I,LBT-Glen Head) is eager to announce he is signing onto a bill proposed by Assemblyman Ron Kim (D-Queens) to repeal the Executive Law amendments to which the Legislature passed a year ago granting Gov. Cuomo emergency powers during impending state emergencies. Currently, the governor’s emergency powers are set to expire at the end of April.

“Stripping Gov. Cuomo of his emergency powers is only the first step in the right direction toward fixing the wrongs of this administration,” said Montesano. “As I have said before, while no approach to the pandemic, especially since none of us have ever been through something like this before, was bound to be perfect, lying to the public for fear of repercussions is utterly unacceptable. For months, the governor has given us many reasons to strip him of his emergency powers, but this is the final straw, and something must be done to stop his unchecked power. Future steps we can take include overriding the probable executive veto and starting impeachment proceedings for the governor. We have been fighting this for long enough. If we don’t step up and act now, then we would be guilty of not standing up for what is right.”
