Tannousis Calls for Additional Regulations on Lithium-Ion Battery Storage Facilities
Assemblyman Michael Tannousis (R,C-Staten Island/Brooklyn) took part in a bipartisan press conference today, May 20, 2025, to call for greater safety regulations for rapidly growing battery storage facilities across the state, which are causing increased risks in communities. The proposal would require a minimum distance of 1,000 feet from the storage facilities to nearby homes, farms and schools to reduce the risk of fire or other potential hazards. It would also allow community input before the project is approved, ensuring transparency and local involvement.
“New York’s push toward clean energy should not come at the expense of our neighbors’ health and safety,” said Tannousis. “By creating a buffer at any battery storage site and giving local residents a seat at the table before the project comes to their backyards, we can help protect our schools and neighborhoods. Our homes and communities shouldn’t be the testing grounds for reckless energy development.”
