Tannousis Honors Staten Island Hero Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis Following Medal of Honor Recognition with Proclamation and Resolution

Assemblyman Michael Tannousis (R,C–Staten Island/ Brooklyn) honored Staff Sgt. Michael H. Ollis, a Staten Island native, following his posthumous Medal of Honor award for extraordinary heroism during combat operations in Afghanistan.

Tannousis introduced a legislative resolution posthumously honoring Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis, upon receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor and his induction into the Hall of Heroes. Tannousis recognized Staff Sgt. Ollis’s courage, sacrifice and service to our nation.

On August 28, 2013, Staff Sgt. Ollis displayed extraordinary heroism when he placed himself between a suicide bomber and a Polish allied officer, shielding the officer from the full force of the explosion and sacrificing his own life. His selfless actions not only saved the life of the allied officer but also helped preserve the lives of more than 40 military and civilian personnel.

Speaking on the Assembly floor, Tannousis reflected on Ollis’ bravery and the lasting impact of his sacrifice.

“Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis is not just a Staten Island hero, but an American hero,” said Tannousis. “His courage and selflessness saved countless lives, and his legacy will forever be a source of pride for our community and our nation.”

After years of advocacy by his family and elected officials, Staff Sgt. Ollis was awarded the Medal of Honor on March 2, 2026, at the White House. He was also honored at the Pentagon and inducted into the Hall of Heroes, ensuring his legacy will be remembered for generations.

Tannousis also recognized Ollis’ parents, Bob and Linda Ollis of Staten Island, for their continued efforts to honor their son’s memory and support veterans through the foundation established in his name.

“We will never forget Michael’s bravery and sacrifice,” Tannousis added. “His story represents the very best of Staten Island and the United States of America.”
