Assemblymember Hunter Statement on New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc v. Bruen Ruling

“On the heels of horrific shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde, Tulsa, Philadelphia, and Chattanooga in recent weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a callous ruling that will weaken New York’s gun laws. The ruling by the Supreme Court eviscerates a long-standing law that limits the public from carrying firearms. This will allow New Yorkers to have handguns when riding the bus to work, going to a movie theater with friends, or going to the grocery store.

“In the wake of an uptick in gun violence, this ruling today makes our communities less safe and endangers the brave men and women of law enforcement. I echo Governor Hochul’s words and believe a special session of the Legislature needs to convene to address this issue.”
