To the Editor:
Valentine’s Day is around the corner and now is the time when we think about how to best express our love for the special people in our lives, our families, our neighbors, and our communities. A wonderful way to do this is by signing up to be an organ donor.
Right now, there are more than 8,500 New Yorkers on the national organ transplant waitlist. Every year, thousands of people die while waiting for a transplant because no suitable donor can be found for them. I myself am proud to express my love for my community through my enrollment as an organ and tissue donor.
Organ donation is viewed as an act of compassion and generosity. There is no cost to the donor’s family or estate for organ and tissue donation, and the decision to donate does not interfere with medical care. One organ donor can save eight lives and heal 75 more through tissue donation.
