‘The Gray Area’ Discusses Govt. Budget Hearing Highlights: Sanctuary Status, Smoke Shop Legislation
Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown) released the latest episode of “The Gray Area” video series. In this week’s episode, Gray reflects on the Local/General Government and Environmental Conservation joint budget hearings, expressing concern over the funding allocation proposed by New York City Mayor Eric Adams to support the city’s sanctuary status.
“During the Government budget hearing, Mayor Adams doubled down on New York City’s sanctuary status, insisting on a third round of funding from the state, the federal government and New York City taxpayers. It is fundamentally unfair that New York state residents are burdened with financing a policy they have no say in,” Gray said.
Gray also addressed the proliferation of smoke shops in New York City, an issue that extends statewide. Gray introduced a bill, A.8376, which focuses on smoke shop premises’ licensing, aiming to impose stricter controls on their locations and tackle illicit activities.
“With A.8376, we aim to bring more oversight to smoke shops, ensuring they operate responsibly and addressing concerns related to their proliferation. It’s about striking a balance between business interests and the well-being of our communities.”
In addition to legislative matters, Gray celebrated the diverse group of visitors to the Capitol this week. Notable guests included FFA students, the Youth Alliance of St. Lawrence County and the Seaway Valley Prevention Council. Two outstanding students, Natalie Rose Todd and Julia Tsogbe, were recognized for their achievements in the reality check program.
“Congratulations to Natalie Rose Todd and Julia Tsogbe, along with all the students participating in the reality check program. Your dedication and accomplishments are truly commendable.”
“As part of a new segment, I will be addressing a question from one of my constituents each week.
