Gray on Fort Drum Being Considered for Microreactor Power Plant Installation
A Statement by Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown)
The announcement that Fort Drum has been named among the Army’s next-step candidates in the JANUS program marks a pivotal and energizing moment for the region. This news reflects a steady community buildup of support, careful preparation and the undeniable attributes that make Fort Drum a natural leader for next-generation energy innovation.
Fort Drum’s position as home to the most-deployed division in the Army is no small factor. As a premier power-projection platform, the installation requires stable, resilient and modern energy infrastructure capable of supporting evolving national defense needs. The JANUS program’s focus on next-generation nuclear technology aligns perfectly with those requirements.
Across the North Country, the community has learned about the technology, understanding its safety profile and recognizing the long-term benefits for both military readiness and regional economic growth.
Many surrounding communities have passed resolutions in support for Fort Drum. This shared commitment has strengthened the case for Fort Drum and demonstrated the community stands ready to support innovative, mission-critical energy solutions. According to the Defense Innovation Unit, “The Army is committed to providing transparent information throughout the planning process and welcomes public engagement and feedback.” My office has been facilitating that process.
New York state is equally prepared to work cooperatively with federal partners to ensure the success of this effort. From energy planning to permitting and workforce readiness, the state has the tools and the expertise to be a full partner in advancing safe, reliable, zero-carbon generation at a site that already plays a critical role in national security.
Today’s development is a strong signal of confidence in Fort Drum, the surrounding region and communities that have worked to position themselves for this opportunity. The momentum behind advanced nuclear development is real, and Fort Drum is well-situated to lead.
