Visiting Farmers’ Markets Helps Keep New York’s Agriculture Sector Strong and Vibrant

Column from Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

New York state is home to some of the best produce in the nation. Our hardworking farmers deliver quality products here and across the country, nourishing our workforce and students and powering our economy. One of the simplest and most direct ways to support these incredible farmers is by visiting the many great farmers’ markets here in the 120th Assembly District and throughout the rest of the state.

This year, I am excited to visit our region’s newest market, which launched earlier this week. The new market will be set up behind Mexico High School and will be open on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. until the end of August. Not only will delicious local products be available, but thanks to the Mexico Chamber of Commerce, there will be live music, children’s activities and food trucks available as well. Prospective vendors can fill out an application here: https://mexicony.org/farmers-market.html.

We have many other great markets in Oswego, Fulton and Pulaski returning for another summer season as well. In addition, Cayuga County and Jefferson County each have several popular farmers markets and farm stands that have become staples of the communities. I am very happy to see them continuing to provide food and fun for both residents and visitors alike.

The Fulton Farmers’ Market will run through Oct. 11 on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. You can find its vendors at the Canalview Park & Shop parking lot off State Route 481 (S. 2nd St.). Additionally, the Oswego Farmers’ Market is set up on West First Street between Bridge Street and Oneida Street on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. and runs through Oct. 9.

For those in Pulaski, you can enjoy crafts, music and family-friendly activities at its farmers’ market on Fridays through Sept. 26 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pulaski Village South Park off State Route 11. And, of course, don’t forget to check out the Richland Farmers’ Market at the Half-Shire Historical Society, 1100 County Rt. 48, through Sept. 10. That market is open on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Richland’s market will also include activities such as darts, cornhole and horseshoes as well!

However you choose to spend your time shopping this summer, I hope it includes supporting our local farmers. They provide a tremendous service under difficult circumstances, and farmers’ markets are an important part of the sustainability of our state’s agricultural sector. I am looking forward to visiting these great locations and enjoying the healthy, fresh and delicious products our farmers made for us, it truly is a win-win for our communities and our economy.
