Assemblyman
Tom Alfano Says “NO”
to School Aid Cuts
|
Dear Neighbor,
Quite frankly, I am very disturbed with the governor’s budget for our community. First, it slashes
funding to our high schools. Elmont Memorial and Sewanhaka High Schools lose almost 43% of
their funding for BOCES and special programs for our students. It also takes away over $1 million
in tax limitation aid as well. Most chillingly, the governor cuts our State share of school aid
yet again.
Many of you have asked me what “tax limitation aid” is. In a nutshell, tax limitation aid is funding
that cuts our local taxes. Our “share” of state aid is what communities like Elmont and North Valley
Stream receive from the budget.
The bottom line is simply this. The governor’s budget hurts our high schools, elementary schools
and is a direct attack on our homeowner pocketbooks.
Make no mistake about this. If the governor were to have his way with this budget, it will mean higher
taxes for all of us. I will not let that happen.
I promise each and every one of you that I will continue to stand up and fight for our fair share of school
aid. I will not agree to any budget that cuts our share. I will not agree to any budget that cuts aid to our
children. And, I will not vote for any budget that cuts funding to special education.

Sincerely,
