Dear Friends:

It doesn’t matter what you say. It’s what you do. It’s what you fight for. It’s what you stand for.

As your Assemblyman, I’ve never been afraid to challenge the powerful. Whether it was demanding that Belmont Racetrack be a better neighbor, winning record-shattering increases to school aid or fighting health care cuts to our own Franklin Hospital, I’ve never backed down for what’s best for our community.

Over the months, many of you have shared personal stories with me about sub-prime mortgages in our neighborhoods, outrageous health care costs and skyrocketing real property taxes. While some have simplistic answers and only pointed fingers, I’ve done something to bring solutions to these problems.

I’ve stood up and won record aid for our schools. I stopped the health care cuts. I won the fight in the Assembly to pass legislation that helps those struggling with their mortgage payments. And, I stood up for common sense plans to cut taxes. That’s probably why the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy gave me one of their highest ratings for being “a fighter for the middle class.”

Rest assured, I will continue the fight to do what’s right for our neighborhoods. I will demand that the federal government address outrageous gas prices. And, I will continue to stand up and be a voice that demands accountability and change.

My hallmark as your Assemblyman has been hope, opportunity, social justice and community. And, if I can be of further service to you, all you have to do is ask. Write, e-mail or call me anytime.

Sincerely,

It’s What You Fight For...

Hope Creating jobs and promoting economic development is the promise of our community. By investing in our schools and colleges through increased school aid, TAP, HEOP, EOP and scholarship aids, we will educate and prepare our young people for the global economy. Hope is also raising expectations for our children by promoting enrichment and after-school tutorial programs and homework help initiatives. I’m proud to have delivered over $7.5 million for economic development and brought home tens of millions of dollars for our schools. It’s not what you say, it’s what you do for the community.

Quality education starts with our schools. That’s why I’ve invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant funding for smart boards, science research programs, math and science immersion programs, mentoring and leadership programs, music enrichment, wellness programs, internships and high technology in our schools. Giving our young people the tools to create opportunity is the promise of our great state and country. It’s not what you say, it’s what you stand for. It’s what I’ve done for our young people. Opportunity

Community Being there for people is what separates those who say and those who do. It’s not enough to just talk. You have to deliver. And I’ve done that for our community. By standing up to Belmont and winning. By speaking the truth to those who wanted to cut health care dollars to our hospitals. By fighting a budget from a governor who wanted to slash our school aid and, not only beating the special interests, but winning the largest school aid increase in New York State history. It’s what you stand for. I stand up for you.

By sponsoring laws banning the display of nooses, tough laws against sex offenders, voting to stop racial profiling, fighting for pay equity for women, fighting sub-prime mortgage predators, increasing access to health insurance programs, access to higher education, supporting new homeowner housing initiatives and providing tax relief for families, I’ve helped build a strong foundation for Elmont and North Valley Stream. Social Justice

“They told me you can’t win the fight for school aid. They told me that our hospitals were going to be cut. They told me that our nursing homes were going to be cut. They told me that nurses and health care workers would be cut. They told me that you’d never get money for the community from Belmont. They told me you won’t get funding for economic development projects for our neighborhoods...

Guess what. They were wrong – on everything. Because it’s what you stand for. It’s what you fight for. I don’t settle and allow people to say ‘no’ to our community.”
