Dear Constituent:

Seasons Greetings: 2004 is about to pass into history. How future generations will view how we did and what legacy we left is certainly deserving of some reflection.

Without much dispute, there is surely a consensus that our nation remains as divided as we were four years ago. The election data confirms the continuing divide in which one half of America views and interprets the same events as somewhat different pictures. The world stands amazed at us.

George W. Bush had promised to accomplish some healing, but instead he led us into a war we didn’t need to fight. Our President pulled some wool over our eyes and a small majority, enough to re-elect him, fell for this. It has cost us so far over $200 Billion and more than 1000 soldiers, dead. There is fear and confusion in America. For some families whose heroes’ spirits will forever roam the deserts of Iraq, there is mourning, sadness, and yes, maybe even some anger. But these holidays come nonetheless.

For Christians like me, it’s Christmas. I’ll celebrate the birth of Christ and reflect on the tidings of joy and his gospel of redemption for sinful mankind. My Jewish constituents will light the Menorah and celebrate Hanukkah. They will remember the courage and faith of their ancestors who fought religious persecution, and the miracle of the oil that gave light for eight full days instead of the expected one.

The story of Kwanzaa will be told to African-Americans young and old, and for many new Americans this melting pot of culture will be overcoming.

Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, whatever religion, all will be caught up in this magic period of joy, good will, good cheer, and spending gone wild.

Yet there will always be some who cannot join in the joy without help from others who have been blessed. Yes, there will always be some in need, and yes, charity should still be the essence of our holiday spirit. So please let us spread the joy by helping up someone who is down and in need of a lift.

As 2004 speeds into memory, I want you to know that I remain deeply humbled and honored by you allowing me the privilege of serving as your member from the 58th Assembly District. I thank you for your continued trust in me and look forward to continue working for you during the next legislative term.

In the spirit of the season, may you and all your loved ones enjoy good health, happiness and prosperity, and be safe with God’s richest blessing throughout the holidays and the New Year.

STUDENTS TO COLLEGE

photo Assemblyman Perry presents scholarship winner Neville Madhoo with his award.
Thanks to Assemblyman Nick Perry, two high school graduates from the 58TH Assembly District received scholarships to help with college-entry costs. The annual Community Awareness Scholarship was awarded to Neville Madhoo of Samuel J. Tilden High School, and Francesca Neptune of Bishop Ford High School.

“These two young people have stayed on the right course and made the correct decisions that will ensure them access to the ladder of success,” said Perry. “I’m proud of them because in addition to their academic achievements they have developed community awareness and demonstrated concern for the neighborhoods they live in.”

ASSEMBLYMAN NICK PERRY CO-SPONSORS
HISTORIC REFORM OF ROCKEFELLER DRUG LAWS

After more than 30 years of determined challenge from New Yorkers who knew from the beginning that Gov. Rockefeller was wrong when he pushed his socalled tough drug fighting proposal into law, the New York Legislature has finally voted to reform the Rockefeller drug laws. The reform bill cosponsored by Assemblyman Nick Perry will make significant changes to New York’s penal law and allow for fairer sentences and access to drug treatment programs.

“I was quite proud to cast this vote. It was a historic act by the state legislature and well overdue,” said Perry of the legislation he co-sponsored. “The Rockefeller drug laws have, for too long, condemned many young lives to incarceration far beyond the appropriate and fair sentence for the crime committed.”

What the new laws will do

Assemblyman N. Nick Perry
  • The reform bill will provide retroactive sentencing relief to some offenders.

  • Remove the racial undertones of the current laws.

  • Reduce sentences for certain first-time and non-violent drug offenders.

  • Allow earlier access for some non-violent offenders to be eligible for less-costly community- based substance abuse treatment.

  • Eliminate the mandatory prison sentences.
