Assemblymember Bing: Protecting East Side neighborhoods

Protecting our community from illegal street vending

An increase in street vendor activity will undoubtedly result in greater competition for rent-paying businesses and lead to a decline in small business activity. Assemblymember Bing is working to limit street vendor expansion in New York City, and has testified before the City Council against increasing the number of vending licenses. He has also sponsored legislation stiffening the penalties for impersonating a disabled veteran vendor (Ch. 11 of 2004).

Opposing the reactivation of 91st Street waste transfer station

Assemblymember Bing is fighting the proposed reactivation of the 91st Street waste transfer station. Heavy dump trucks and mountains of trash will be located one block from the Stanley Isaacs-Holmes Towers, and a densely populated neighborhood. This will threaten the health and safety of children and seniors, and negatively impact the quality of life and character of this vibrant community.

Fighting the construction of an East 50th Street utility building

Assemblymember Bing has joined residents, businesses, and other officials from the neighborhood in their fight against the plan for a dangerous utility building to be built on East 50th Street between Park and Madison Avenues. As part of the LIRR East Side Access project, this building would house three massive cooling towers that would emit potentially heavily polluted and health damaging toxins into the neighborhood. It would also house highly combustible emergency fuel tanks similar to those that led to the collapse of Seven World Trade Center shortly after the 9/11 attacks.

Working to preserve East 46th Street

Assemblymember Bing is working to preserve the quality of life in Turtle Bay and address the growing problem of noisy bars on 2nd Avenue. Joining local residents and other officials, Assemblymember Bing has petitioned the State Liquor Authority to prevent the establishment of a night club on 2nd Avenue and East 46th Street.

As part of his school district tour, Assemblymember Bing meets with teachers of Public School 77 to hear their questions and concerns. He fought for an additional $327 million in funding for NYC schools, over the governor’s proposal, in this year’s budget. photo
