ASSEMBLYMEMBER JONATHAN L. BING: Education Update

Dear Neighbor:

As we approach spring and begin to plan for the next school year, I wanted to provide an update on some of the education issues most relevant to our community. As the parent of a daughter who next year will attend public school on the East Side, education is very important to me. Over the past year, I have worked to build and renovate schools on the East Side, rezone elementary schools and ensure parents in my district can voice their concerns and be heard by the Department of Education (DOE).

Within this newsletter, you will find information about new and renovated elementary schools on the East Side, a map of new school zones, useful DOE and local school contact information for parents, and information about recent developments and legislation which will affect your child’s school in the near future.

My office is always available to people who need assistance with education issues. We will work with your local school and with the DOE to find the appropriate solutions to your problems, and get timely answers to any questions you may have about any aspect of the enrollment process. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 212-605-0937, or via e-mail at bingj@assembly.state.ny.us.

Sincerely,
Jonathan L. Bing

New East Side School Zoning

photo
Assemblymember Bing continues to work to improve education for families on the East Side. He authored groundbreaking legislation that helped to create an additional 1,000 school seats for East Side elementary schools. His efforts have resulted in the expansion of P.S. 59 on East 57th Street, the creation of a new P.S. 267 on East 63rd Street in the former MEETH building, and the relocation of P.S. 151 into a permanent facility on East 88th Street. To ensure the most effective use of the newly created school seats and to address overcrowding and kindergarten waitlists, Assemblymember Bing partnered with the Community Education Council, the DOE, and East Side parents to rezone District 2. The rezoning has been approved by the Panel for Educational Policy and is a critical component in providing the best education possible for children on the East Side. The new zoning will be implemented for the 2011-12 school year and affects P.S. 6, P.S. 59, P.S. 151, P.S. 158, P.S. 183, P.S. 290, and P.S. 267. If you have any questions regarding the new school zones please contact Assemblymember Bing’s office at 212-605-0937.

The Community Education Council of District 2 (CECD2)
is composed of nine elected District 2 parents, two Manhattan Borough President appointees, and one student member. CECs hold monthly public meetings and help shape educational policy in the districts including approving school zoning lines, holding hearings on the capital plan, evaluating community superintendents, and providing input on other important policy issues. For further information please visit www.cecd2.net.

The Panel for Educational Policy (PEP)
is composed of thirteen appointed members. Each borough president appoints one member and the mayor appoints eight members. They are joined by two non-voting student members and the Chancellor. They also are charged with identifying issues of concern to families and working with school leaders to ensure that these issues are addressed in a timely manner. Parent coordinators are reachable through your local school’s main office number, and should be contacted when parents have questions or concerns about their children’s school.

District Family Advocates: District Family Advocates work closely with Parent Coordinators to address parent concerns on the district level. For District 2, the Family Advocate is Jennifer Greenblatt. She can be reached at (212) 356-3789.
