Dear Neighbor:
As we approach spring and begin to plan for the next school year, I wanted to provide an update on some of the education issues most relevant to our community. As the parent of a daughter who next year will attend public school on the East Side, education is very important to me. Over the past year, I have worked to build and renovate schools on the East Side, rezone elementary schools and ensure parents in my district can voice their concerns and be heard by the Department of Education (DOE).
Within this newsletter, you will find information about new and renovated elementary schools on the East Side, a map of new school zones, useful DOE and local school contact information for parents, and information about recent developments and legislation which will affect your child’s school in the near future.
My office is always available to people who need assistance with education issues. We will work with your local school and with the DOE to find the appropriate solutions to your problems, and get timely answers to any questions you may have about any aspect of the enrollment process. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 212-605-0937, or via e-mail at bingj@assembly.state.ny.us.
Sincerely,
Jonathan L. Bing

The Community Education Council of District 2 (CECD2)
is composed of nine elected District 2 parents, two Manhattan Borough President appointees,
and one student member. CECs hold monthly public meetings and help shape educational
policy in the districts including approving school zoning lines, holding hearings on the capital
plan, evaluating community superintendents, and providing input on other important policy issues.

The Panel for Educational Policy (PEP)
is composed of thirteen appointed members. Each borough president appoints one member and
the mayor appoints eight members. They are joined by two non-voting student members and the
Chancellor. The PEP serves as the decision making body for policies regarding education in New
York City. It approves school relocations, grade expansions and school closures.
