Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski:

Protect your family by keeping informed about product safety

Dear Neighbor,

Lead exposure is extremely harmful to children and can cause several developmental problems, including brain and nervous system damage, and learning problems. Today, millions of toys continue to be recalled for lead contamination and other hazards.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission can request but not require retailers to remove dangerous toys and other harmful products from store shelves. That is why I am supporting legislation to provide more stringent controls over the lead content in jewelry sold in New York State (A.8077). The bill passed both the Assembly and Senate, but was vetoed by the governor who said more needed to be done to address his concerns about how to effectively enforce this measure.

I am steadfast in my efforts to work with the governor’s office and retailers to improve this bill. Additionally, I will do everything I can to remove lead from toys, so our families and children remain protected.

The Web sites I’ve listed provide information about recalled products and instructions to sign up for e-mail alerts about recalls. I urge you to take every precaution to ensure the products your family uses are safe.
