Assemblywoman
Aileen Gunther:
High-voltage power lines shouldn’t be in our backyards

Gunther is fighting to protect the Hudson Valley’s quality of life

New York Regional Interconnection (NYRI) wants to build a high-voltage power line through Sullivan and Orange Counties using eminent domain to seize private property. Its plan is to send our energy supply to New York City.

NYRI’s proposed route will cut through the heart of many Hudson Valley communities, disturbing the beauty that our region is known for. Power lines running through the Rio Reservoir and the Mongaup Valley Wildlife Management Area – whether above or below ground – will pose a threat to bald eagles, other protected species and our region’s tourism.

Gunther believes this company is out of touch with reality and did not consider the needs of Hudson Valley residents. This project will harm the Hudson Valley by:

  • Decreasing property values

  • Damaging our environment

  • Decreasing tourism

  • Creating potential health risks

Safeguarding private property and Hudson Valley residents

Looking out for the best interests of Hudson Valley residents, Assemblywoman Gunther is standing up to NYRI’s proposal. She has taken numerous steps to prevent NYRI’s plan from becoming a reality. These include:

  • Passing legislation to prevent NYRI from using eminent domain to build power lines across the state (A.11977-A, awaits governor’s signature)

  • Urging the Public Service Commission to deny NYRI’s application for its proposal

  • Standing in unity with federal, state and local officials and Hudson Valley residents against NYRI’s proposal, including U.S. Congressman Maurice Hinchey and state Senator John Bonacic

  • Working with the chair of the Assembly’s Energy Committee to hold hearings this summer

Assemblywoman Gunther urges residents to help fight NYRI’s proposal by filling out the form to the right and returning it to her district office by July 31, 2006. These forms will be collected and then sent to the Public Service Commission requesting that they reject NYRI’s application so that the Hudson Valley’s quality of life will not be compromised.

Dear Public Service Commission:

I strongly urge you to REJECT NYRI’S APPLICATION for Article VII, Case # 06-T-0650, because this power line would damage the environment, devalue our homes, and create potential health risks.

The construction of this massive power line is NOT in our public interest.

Thank you.
