Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther |
is saving you money at the pump |
Gunther understands that life shouldn’t be so taxing |
This agreement will save New Yorkers millions of dollars annually at the pump by capping state sales taxes on gas at 8 cents per gallon, which locks in the tax at the $2 per gallon rate. With gas prices at $3 per gallon, this agreement reduces the tax on gas by 4 cents per gallon. The Legislature’s gas tax plan took effect June 1 for the state sales tax and July 1 for local sales taxes. With this agreement, local governments will be able to pass legislation to cap their local sales taxes on gasoline, for a potential savings of $450 million statewide.
Recognizing the importance of increased alternative fuels use as a part of an effective energy strategy for the future, Assemblywoman Gunther’s legislation included a plan to increase the distribution of feasible alternatives to gasoline. Under the bill, the state Thruway Authority and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority would be required to develop a plan to provide alternative fuels at Thruway service areas. Assemblywoman Gunther supports bringing ethanol producing companies to the state – as we have seen in Central New York. By turning existing plants into ethanol production plants and building partnerships with businesses and farmers, New York can become a leader in creating renewable energy sources – producing corn-based ethanol by 2008, and cellulosic ethanol in only a few more years.

Tips to save gas and improve mileage |
Drive sensibly Aggressive driving wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Observe the speed limit Each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas. Remove excess weight Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2 percent. Avoid excessive idling Idling gets 0 miles per gallon. Cars with larger engines typically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller engines. Use cruise control Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas. Use overdrive gears When you use overdrive gearing, your car’s engine speed goes down, saving gas and reducing engine wear. |
“New Yorkers have been struggling with high fuel costs for too long. Because of an absence of
leadership in Washington, the Legislature, in a bipartisan fashion, took it upon itself to bring relief
to New Yorkers. This plan will save Hudson Valley residents millions of dollars at the pump.”
