“Each and every child should have access to the same excellent education, regardless of where they live or what their parents earn – this budget is a giant leap towards this goal.”

New York schools will receive an unprecedented $1.7 billion more than last year, including nearly $12 million more for schools in the 101st Assembly District. Assemblymember Cahill believes this funding will not just provide our children with a sound, basic education – but a first-class education that will help them succeed throughout their lives. Investing in New York’s colleges and universities Assemblymember Cahill fought for a budget that freezes the current tuition rate at SUNY schools and provides almost $160 million for SUNY operating costs, which is nearly $12 million more than initially proposed in the Governor’s budget. Assemblymember Cahill, a SUNY New Paltz graduate, has always been a strong advocate for the University. Since being elected to the Assembly, Mr. Cahill has been instrumental in securing $23 million for the renovation of Old Main and $10 million for the expansion of the Student Union Building, as well as funding for the new multi-million dollar athletic facility on campus. In addition, he brought an increase of $306,276 over last year in operational funding to Ulster County Community College in the 2007 budget to help support local college students. Encouraging summer reading programs for kids For the second year in a row, Assemblymember Cahill secured $20,000 in state grants to support summer reading programs at every public library in the 101st Assembly District. For the past ten years, he has sponsored the New York State Summer Reading Challenge to encourage reading among parents and children. He will once again host a ceremony in early fall to award the participants. Many local businesses donate refreshments, prizes and entertainment to help make the evening extra special for area readers. If you would like more information about the Summer Reading Challenge, please contact his Kingston District office at 338-9610.
Fighting for the tax relief Ulster families need and deserve Under the new Middle Class STAR program, homeowners will receive an increased STAR rebate based on their income. Families making up to $90,000 will receive a 60 percent increase. Boosting local aid for Ulster County Assemblymember Cahill brought home over $3 million in local aid to cities, towns and villages in Ulster County for essential services, while keeping property taxes in check. |
