GIGLIO HELPS SECURE PASSAGE OF DAIRY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Assemblyman Giglio helped secure bipartisan passage of the Dairy Assistance Program. The program will help local dairy farmers who struggled with low milk prices last year.

The Dairy Assistance Program provided $30 million in cash payments to eligible dairy farmers to help offset a devastating year caused by low milk prices and a rise in operating costs. The payments were awarded in a timely fashion, which helped Southern Tier dairy farmers remain financially viable in time for the spring planting season.

While the $30 million in aid to dairy farmers was a significant step in relieving the burdens of the past year, it fell extremely short of the $60 million that Assemblyman Giglio and many of his colleagues had sought. In the coming months, Assemblyman Giglio will continue to fight for increased aid to all farmers who serve as the backbone of our economy.

Giglio’s Agricultural Agenda

In order to restore the prosperity of Southern Tier farms, Assemblyman Giglio is supporting a comprehensive legislative agenda that:

  • Restores hope in the future of farming in New York state by establishing the New York Farmer Recruitment and Retention Act.

  • Caps property tax assessments on farmland at 10%, eliminating a discrepancy in the current formula that would have produced an average $500 increase in property taxes this year for farm owners.

  • Expands Family Health Plus benefits to farm families by easing the eligibility requirements. By removing the depreciation of business assets from income eligibility requirements, more farm families will have access to benefits they would have previously been denied.

  • Lowers costs for farmers by providing low interest loans that will allow farmers to produce energy on their own farms.

  • Extends a property tax credit to farmers who lease farmland. This proposal would provide $2 million in tax relief to New York’s agriculture industry and enhance access to farmland and open space preservation.
