Assemblymember Cahill's Statement on
the Connecticut Power Plant Tragedy

Following the tragic events involving an explosion at a Middletown Connecticut power plant, in which at least five people were killed and dozens injured, New York State Assembly Energy Chair Kevin Cahill (D-Ulster, Dutchess) issued following statement:

"I offer my condolences to the families who lost loved ones and extend my wishes for a speedy recovery to those who were injured in yesterday's tragic accident. This occurrence is a stark reminder that safety must always be a paramount concern when it comes to siting, building and maintaining power plants. There should be nothing short of a comprehensive investigation into the events and circumstances that contributed to the explosion. I urge local, state and federal officials to promptly share the findings of their review so we can identify the appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring elsewhere.

As we move forward with initiatives aimed at satisfying our state's energy needs, we must all redouble our efforts to ensure that the most stringent health and safety standards are met so New Yorkers can continue to depend upon a clean, safe and reliable energy supply."
