Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco Regarding The End Of The 2007 Legislative Session
Dems push marijuana and gay marriage as property tax reform, other issues take backseat

"We started out with a bang but we're ducking out with a whimper. We started this year's session with landmark legislative victories on Civil Confinement, Workers' Compensation Reform and Ethics Reform. There were very high hopes. However, it seems this place regressed in the final weeks. During this past week the two longest debates the Majority advanced in the State Assembly were on the controversial issues of gay marriage and legalized medical marijuana. Regardless of one's opinion on these two issues, it's ridiculous that they trumped action on issues that have near-universal impact such as out-of-control property taxes and gas prices and an underperforming upstate economy. The Majority allowed no debate and no action on these critical issues. Likewise, we still don't have a renewed Article X power plant siting law. We still don't have a death penalty for cop killers or increased prison sentences for habitual offenders. These and other issues had the support in the Senate and with the governor yet they were ignored by Assembly Majority members in favor of misplaced priorities."
