Assemblyman Ramos announces Central Islip School District will recover lost building aid

Assemblyman Phil Ramos (D-Central Islip) announced that an agreement has been reached that will grant the Central Islip School District approximately $40 million in restored school building aid in this year’s state budget. In 2006, the school district had its expected aid canceled due to a missed filing deadline.

“This is welcomed news for Central Islip taxpayers who no longer have to worry about paying for school construction costs that they were never supposed to pay for,” Assemblyman Ramos said.

The state will now reimburse nearly all of the money that the Central Islip School District spent when they undertook several projects to expand classrooms and make additions to various schools. Due to a bureaucratic mistake the state Department of Education denied reimbursement funding for the costs of the projects and demanded that the school district repay money it already received for the project.

“This fix is long overdue but is welcomed news given the tough times we’re facing,” Assemblyman Ramos
