Assemblyman McDonough Announces Public Library Construction Grants

Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) is pleased to announce that the Merrick Library will be receiving a Public Library Construction Grant from the State Commission for Libraries to be used for construction projects. The grant funds are a one-time allocation of $14 million in capital funds provided by the New York State Legislature in the 2006-2007 State Budget.

“Our public libraries are a valuable resource to our community and the residents they serve,” said Assemblyman McDonough. “The restoration of the historic wing building of the Merrick Library will finally be accomplished, and restore this landmark to its former glory.”

Merrick Library will receive a construction grant of $104,121 for the completion of the restoration of its historic wing building.

New York’s public libraries are in urgent need of renovation and upgrading. A recent survey showed a need for public library construction and renovation projects because more than 40% of the public library buildings statewide are over 60 years old, while another 30% are more than three decades old.

Among the many problems confronting local public libraries is an inability to accommodate users with disabilities, provide Internet, computer and other electronic technologies to users because of outdated and inadequate electrical wiring, insufficient space to house the library’s collection, and lack of sufficient space for public access computers.
