The New York State School Tax Relief Program (STAR) application deadline of March 1, 2011 is fast approaching, and Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,I,C – Glen Head) is urging qualifying homeowners to take advantage of the rebates the program offers.
“The STAR program helps homeowners by alleviating the property tax burden,” Montesano said. “March 1 will be here before you know it, and I don’t want any of my constituents to miss out on this tax relief.”
STAR provides some relief to homeowners through partial exemptions from school property taxes. The program is divided into two parts:
- Basic STAR is available to taxpayers that earn less than $500,000 in total income.
- Enhanced STAR is available to senior citizens (65 and older) with qualifying incomes.
Homeowners may file an application either with their local assessor, or on the Internet.
“STAR is a great example of the tax relief New Yorkers desperately need,” Montesano said. “My colleagues and I are working hard to ensure that homeowners receive tax breaks that help them stay in their homes.”
