Assemblyman Tom McKevitt (R,C,I – East Meadow) announced today the beginning of a new sex offender relocation notification system. The new system is being added to New York State Emergency Management Office’s NY-ALERT system, which already sends out notifications about different topics including severe weather, missing children, transportation delays or public health advisories.
Through the new notification system, New Yorkers will be able to register to receive alerts, via e-mail, text message, fax or telephone, whenever a moderate- or high-risk sex offender listed on the New York State Sex Offender Registry moves to or from a community of interest to them.
“The new sex offender notification system allows New Yorkers to receive alerts when high-risk sex offenders move into their community,” said McKevitt. “As a husband and father, I know that nothing is more important than keeping your family safe and this new system is another tool to help protect the innocent from a potential predator.”
New York residents who wish to register to receive alerts may do so at the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) website at www.criminaljustice.state.ny.us. Individuals may register to receive notifications for up to three areas whenever a level 2 or level 3 sex offender who is listed on the state registry moves into or out of these communities.
The new system will be coordinated through the New York State Emergency Management Office’s NY-ALERT system as the result of legislation that was signed into law last year.
