March 17, 2010

Assemblyman Tom McKevitt (R,C,I – East Meadow) (pictured above) today honored New York’s Special Olympic athletes at a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Special Olympics New York (SONY). The event highlighted SONY’s mission statement of providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for all children and adults with developmental disabilities while giving them continuing opportunities to improve physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
“I am extremely honored to take part in today’s commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Special Olympics New York,” said McKevitt. “These athletes are an inspiration to me, because they know that anything is possible with hard work and determination. I applaud the Special Olympics for their continued efforts to improve the lives of these extraordinary athletes and their families.”
Currently, New York is home to tens of thousands of athletes who participate in Special Olympics programs.
