McKevitt Works on Behalf of Healthcare for Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Companies
May 6, 2010
As an avid supporter of volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers, Assemblyman Tom McKevitt (R,C,I – East Meadow) is pleased to announce that legislation which increases access to healthcare benefits for emergency service personnel was signed into law today by Governor Paterson.
“The brave firefighters who endanger their lives to protect their neighbors from fire and the hardworking ambulance workers who save lives every day deserve to have access to affordable healthcare,” said McKevitt. “I am honored to be a part of ensuring that this legislation became reality and I will do all that I can to formulate further legislation which supports these dedicated members of our community.”
The new law will allow municipal corporations, but not require them, to offer health insurance coverage to volunteer fire and ambulance workers, and also would allow these volunteers to buy in to the New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP).
