In an effort to increase awareness and advocacy for New Yorkers with disabilities, Assemblyman Tom McKevitt (R,C,I – East Meadow), Ranking Minority Member on the Assembly Committee on Mental Health, co-hosted “Disability Awareness Day” at the state Capitol. McKevitt joined members of the disability community as well as his Assembly colleagues to present awards to individuals who have overcome their disability.
“It was an honor to be able to co-host a program which applauds the accomplishments of those who have struggled to overcome their disabilities,” said McKevitt. “I encourage the continued advocacy of this worthy cause, and I will continue to spread awareness and work toward making New York a more friendly state to live in for those who have physical challenges.”
Along with the presentation of awards, the Assembly passed a package of legislation that included increasing disability awareness, increasing the rights of individuals with disabilities and making election sites and public transportation more disability-friendly.
