Rozic Secures Additional Mandarin Interpreter for P.S. 162 in Bayside

Interpreter to provide translation services in time for statewide math exam

Queens, NY – Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D, WF-Fresh Meadows) worked with the New York City Department of Education to identify funding for P.S. 162 John Golden in order to hire an additional Mandarin interpreter for newly arrived Chinese students taking the statewide math exam.

P.S. 162 welcomed several new students from China to its school earlier this year; however, the school soon realized that it lacked sufficient resources to hire an additional Mandarin interpreter to translate while administering the required statewide math exam. Assemblywoman Rozic worked closely with the Department of Education to ensure that the students received appropriate in-person translation support while taking the exams on April 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.

“Limited English proficiency should not hinder a student’s potential in our education system,” said Rozic. “As a representative to many immigrant families, I remain committed to improving language access for individuals both in and outside of the classroom.”
