Assemblywoman Paulin’s Bill to Protect Consumers from Fraud Passes the Assembly

The Assembly voted to pass Assemblywoman Amy Paulin’s (D-Scarsdale) anti-spoofing bill on Monday, March 23rd. Spoofing occurs when a caller alters their caller identification information to hide their true identity. This practice is most commonly employed by telemarketers who hope that a resident is more likely to answer the phone when the call appears to be of a personal nature rather than a sales call.

Paulin’s bill (A.52) will make the practice of spoofing a violation of the general business law and allow individuals to seek relief in the event that their caller identification information is stolen. Putting an end to the practice of spoofing will protect residents from deception, harassment, and possible fraud.
