Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,I-Pulaski), a leader in the movement to ban synthetic marijuana statewide, proudly joined his colleagues in the Assembly today in passing and sponsoring legislation to criminalize the sale and distribution of these dangerous products. Synthetic marijuana, while sold and marketed as potpourri and incense, provides many of the same effects as marijuana and cocaine. For Barclay, passing this legislation was imperative for protecting the health of children and keeping these dangerous substances out of their hands.

“I am pleased that the Assembly has acted to ban the sale and distribution of synthetic marijuana,” said Barclay. “Over the past several months, I have received countless calls and letters from across the state expressing concern over the availability and dangers of this product."

This bill adds synthetic cannabinoids to the list of controlled substances. The legislation, A.9855, bans the sale and possession of synthetic marijuana. The bill has advanced to the Senate.

“Between the overwhelming support of residents across the state and the high profile nature of this issue, it was plain to see this action was needed to get these drugs out of stores. Synthetic marijuana has been a threat to the safety and well-being of our children for too long, and I am glad that today the Assembly moved to criminalize the sale and possession,” added Barclay.
