Barclay Opposes Microstamping Legislation

Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,I-Pulaski) is urging his legislative colleagues to stand with him in opposition to A03244, a bill that would force pistol manufacturers to equip their guns with costly, unproven microstamping technology.

The controversial legislation cleared the Codes Committee on Tuesday, June 3.

“Microstamping technology would be a costly burden for our upstate gun manufacturers. It is the latest example of the Assembly Majority attempting to erode the rights of Second Amendment supporters under the specious guise of public safety,” said Barclay.

Microstamping has been a controversial component of proposed gun control measures in New York State for years. It would force manufacturers to produce a unique alpha-numeric code on the firing pin identifying the make, model, and serial number of the pistol.

There is no consensus regarding the technology’s effectiveness, and, obviously, would be rendered useless in the event of a stolen firearm.

“The idea of jeopardizing the livelihood of upstate manufacturers by mandating that they implement potentially ineffective technology is a prime example of the Assembly Majority’s singular devotion to downstate political interests,” said Barclay. “I will continue to be a staunch supporter of our Second Amendment rights,” he added.
