As a parent, I know the importance of keeping my children safe and how worrisome it can be when you’re unable to get in touch with your teenager. Cellular phones have made this task much easier. Realizing this, a group called “The Century Council” is helping parents and teens keep in touch during prom night.
The Century Council is a national, independent, not-for-profit organization funded by liquor distillers across the nation to fight drunk driving and underage drinking. To keep teens safe and responsible on prom night, The Century Council created a new “Safe Prom Night Messaging” initiative. The goal is to reach as many parents and teens as possible with an innovative initiative that aims to reduce teenage drinking and drunk driving on prom night this year.
I encourage teens and their parents to participate in the program by registering to receive a free “safe prom” text message on prom night. By visiting www.centurycouncil.org/promtext, teenagers and parents have the opportunity to enter limited information such as cell number, prom date and zip code which, in turn, allows them to receive reminder messages to stay away from alcohol on prom night.
The safety of our community’s youth is of the utmost importance. Taking small, unobtrusive, but important, steps like this ensures the well-being of our loved ones on a night that will be with them their entire lives.
