Today Governor Spitzer, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno held a press conference to discuss the issues of budget and government reform. Minority leadership from both houses was conspicuously absent. The press conference resembled the "three men in a room" approach to governing, which was considered the status quo under the Pataki Administration and supposed to change as of 'Day One.'
“On ‘Day One,’ everything was supposed to change,” noted Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R,C,I-Greece). “Today’s press conference was a hypocrisy. On the one hand the powers that be talked of government reform while on the other they perpetuated the belief that three men in a room continues despite Governor Spitzer’s campaign pledge.”
“Governor Spitzer set the bar high during his campaign when committing to government reform measures. Today’s press conference does not meet those expectations,” remarked Reilich. “Minority members should not be excluded from discussions that impact our constituents. Today’s events will not renew faith in how Albany operates. I call upon the governor to honor his commitment and open up the legislative process."
