With Memorial Day fast approaching and our men and women in the Armed Forces valiantly serving in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, it is important to take a moment away from the weekend festivities and remember the sacrifices these young men and women are making for their country.
Just as our fathers and grandfathers fought during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam to keep America and the world safe, today’s soldiers are fighting the next great threat all with the common goal of worldwide freedom. Out of appreciation for their sacrifices, the Assembly Minority Conference is proposing Patriot Plan IV – an extensive package of benefits extended to the members of the National Guard and Reserve.
Patriot Plan IV would make it easier for military personnel to balance their military duties with those of civilian life. The legislation would also ease the financial burden soldiers and their families experience while on duty.
Among the provisions included in the bill is a daycare assistance program for members of the organized militia (the Army and Air National Guard), assistance with purchasing homes with low down payments and favorable interest rates, and an extension of state benefits for disabled veterans whose disabilities are directly related to their service.
Providing these types of benefits to those who put themselves in harm’s way to defend our freedom is our patriotic duty as Legislators. It is my hope that our counterparts in the Assembly Majority Conference will join us and help pass this important legislation before the end of session.
